CS2 Doppler phases explained

Doppler skins are some of the most popular in CS2, but they hide a catch that trips up a lot of valuations: the same Doppler skin name can be worth wildly different amounts depending on its phase. Here is how it works.

What are Doppler phases?

Doppler finishes, found on knives and some pistols, come in several variants called phases. The standard set is Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 and Phase 4, each with a different colour mix and pattern. Two knives can both be labelled "Doppler" yet look quite different and sell for different prices, purely because of their phase.

The rare gems

Beyond the numbered phases sit the prized variants: Ruby (deep red), Sapphire (rich blue), Black Pearl (dark with a colour shimmer), and, for Gamma Dopplers, Emerald (vivid green). These gems are far rarer than the standard phases and command large premiums, often many times the price of a normal phase of the same knife.

Why phases matter for value

Because phase is not shown in the basic item name, it is easy to misjudge a Doppler if you ignore it. A Phase 2 might be worth a certain amount while a Sapphire of the same knife is worth several times more. Accurate valuations need to identify the phase, not just the skin name.

How to tell phases apart

Phases are identified by their colour distribution and pattern. Players and tools often use the in-game inspect view, or the underlying pattern data, to work out which phase a specific knife is. It takes a trained eye, which is why automated tools that read this information are so handy.
